Everyone has their dream home but because the expense often outweighs the reality, we work with what we have and remodel piece by piece. Even with this more frugal approach, it can be costly; therefore, the list below is an inspirational group of visionaries that have taken their remodeling into their own hands, showing us how to save a buck in the process.
(We thought we’d change things up a bit today and present some home renovations you might not be doing in the near future. )
1. Adding Additional Rooms
If you’re looking to add an extra bedroom or two to accommodate your growing kin (or some imposing houseguests), you might want to look to this subtle home expansion as an example. Without knocking out a single wall, this crafty architect has expanded their homestead and proved that seven mobile homes are truly better than one.

2. Country Style Front Porch
Adding a custom crafted front deck to your home can add a wonderful aesthetic appeal but it can also cost thousands of dollars when all is said and done. If the expense isn’t in your budget, simply go to your local scrap yard and find the best piece of plywood available to you. By laying it down where a deck would have gone, you’ll achieve identical results at a fraction of the price. No one will know the difference.

3. Pimping the Patio
If you’ve done all you can to upgrade the interior of your home, you may want to turn your attention to your patio – with some very simple additions, it can be the recreational talk of the town. Try installing a swimming pool, a state of the art BBQ grill or even something as simple as a classic porch swing for those sultry summer nights.

4. Synthetic Siding
Upgrading the siding on your home is a relatively quick and inexpensive way to give your home a dramatic facelift. Especially with older homes, when the original wood starts to weather, you may want to transition into a more durable synthetic material such as vinyl siding or tin license plates.

5. Beautiful Balcony
If your home has a breathtaking view, you’ll want to maximize the amenity with an open-air balcony. However, because building a balcony can cost a pretty penny and requires compliance with a number of building codes, avoid the red tape and put the power in your own hands. After all, a balcony is in the eye of the beholder.

6. Home Theater Experience
With recent advancements in technology, home theaters are becoming a popular trend in the world of home remodeling, as they are more accessible than ever before. All it takes is a flat screen TV and some stadium seating but, for those that have neither, let these photos be a shining example of resourcefulness.

7. Lighting Fixtures
Upgrading your lighting fixtures is an inexpensive remodel that can add immediate value to your home. Yes, even the most mundane space can be brought to life with a modern ceiling fan or a classic chandelier.
8. Upgrading the Appliances
Not all remodels are aesthetic improvements on the surface; sometimes the upgrades exist behind the scenes in the form of appliances or plumbing. Take this alternative as an example; it may not be energy star approved but you can bet this custom hot water heater will only cost as much to operate as a coffee maker.

9. Bonus Room
As your kids get older and more rambunctious, every family needs some sort of bonus room to absorb the recreational overflow. Because this can be an expensive remodel, you’ll want to consider ways to minimize your cost of materials – ever thought of repurposing existing structures?

10. Expanded Entry Way
When the walls of your home seem to be closing in, simple expansions can make a world of difference. Whether you’re adding another room or simply extending a wall, here is a fine example of how additional space can really add a new dimension to your home (and distract from the duct tape holding it all together).

LMAO!! XD
Must be nice making fun of the poor. I enjoy it too. I usually go to Homeless people and laugh in their face at their misfortune. A+ to this website.
I suppose it all depends on your perspective, Andrew. When we set out to put this together, the thought wasn’t about ‘making fun of the poor’, but rather about showing creative, if odd, ways that people make the best of what they’ve got. It was meant to amuse, not offend.
Thanks for comments.
You see I understood exactly what you sere doing the second I saw these pictures. Thanks! I talk to so many people that think that happiness is received with money and material things. I am not going to wast my time with any of these negative remarks that I have read. If someone can not see the trees so scene talking about the forest.
i found it to be funny….. you do what you can with what you can…. or some of these folks are just doing this for a laugh…. and that is why it was posted, for a laugh… so people just have to find fault in everything…..
It’s funny if you show the living conditions of the American poor it’s hilarious, and when you show the excess that the rich buy, everyone is sickened.
Andrew isn’t wrong in making the assertion. Intentions aside, this is still a form of exploitation.
and the polish poor
Yo I don’t think it is a funny thing to make fun of poor people it could be you someday, you never know your misfortunes, you are not god or anyone, so think about twice before it comes out of your mouth. You know some people are homeless because of some bad thing, not all homeless are homeless because they are lazy. Open your eyes, it’s people like you who think, and say stupid things that this that is polluting the world with dumb minds. If you are not a poor person, you don’t know how hard it is, so If you don’t know then don’t make fun of it.
@Mengu, He wasn’t serious about making fun of poor people, he was criticizing this collection by saying what he did. He believes that by doing this they are making fun of poor people, and they were stating that whomever put this together must also like laughing at homeless people. He was being sarcastic. He doesn’t actually do that, he just wants to show his distaste to the people that made this.
Amazing how people all of a sudden get offended by the truth. The truth is that some of us grew up poor and have since moved on. Most people who are defenders of the poor have never been poor. I grew up around people just like this living in a trailer of my own. I found it funny then, and I find it funny now. I am not laughing because they are poor, or lazy, or have some other misfortune thrown their way. No, I am laughing because no matter what their situation is, taping lights to a coat hanger or funneling water into a coffee pot for hot water is funny. This is called ingenuity. These people have devised many ways to makes themselves happy and comfortable. It is in these types of moments that you either discover that you can create something useful, or blow your fingers off trying to rid the yard of pests. You never know what crazy things come from neighbors like these but it is always funny to watch. Most of these people laugh at each other at the things they create, because a sense of humor keeps you from becoming cynical.
Awesome, Stan.
Word. Haters gonna hate.
Oh good grief, Mengu, get a grip~~
@Andrew, I’d like to point out some faults about your “making fun of the poor” comment concerning everything in this article. I do believe that “poor” people could not afford that rather large TV set sticking out of the wall, and even cheap trailers can still run you between 5-20K each. The article was made to poke fun/ show off the resourcefulness of some of us who cannot afford the “finer” things in life. I for one think the trailer hotel or whatever is rather funny.
I actually like the license plate siding because it’s kinda artsy and a great way to recycle.
@Andrew Although the two are not mutually exclusive, there is a difference between being poor and being redneck. And there ain’t nothing wrong with a little redneck fun every now and then (minus the rebel flags).
whats wrong w/the confederate flag?
i like the licenses plates also…and the is nothing wrong with the rebel flag…. would you have said anything about it if it had been a flag say from Calafornia??????…….. a rebel falg is part of history……….
because it means you support white-supremacists who think you should be able to keep a slave, that’s why. it’s exactly why you don’t see swastikas in Germany anymore, despite what the swastika meant before it was the symbol of the nazi party, it has become the emblem for a disgusting and backwards time in history, like the confederate flag. you don’t have to wave something around to remember that it happened, just stay educated.
Yes!!!! It’s so surprising that a lot of people STILL don’t see anything wrong with flying the confederate flag these days! It’s extremely disrespectful to an entire population of AMERICANS!! Well said kurtis!
Afraid of a flag? Give me a break. People are so uptight these days.
Political correctness is for those who are afraid of what someone else might think or say about them. If you care what anyone else thinks or says about you, your the one with the issue, not them.
These little things mean nothing and others points at them as atrocities based on their own issues. The swastika and the confederate flag were both things that I thought were “cool” looking as a kid, now that I have a kid he feels the same way as I did then. I understand what they represent to a FEW, that doesn’t outweigh the right of FREE citizens to enjoy things regardless they like.
Its no different then the church freaking out about a naked statue.
The buried bus is a tornado shelter.
Hey. they have a roof over their head and the guy is sitting in the sun drinking a beer.
What did you do today.
Happiness comes in all forms. Beer helps.
the redneck hot water made me lol so hard….. so ghetto rigged…
The hot water was funny, but I can actually see that being used in workshop bathrooms! I’ve been in some shops, were we made crap like that just because, lol.
Ironically, if you look at the bottles in the pic, they’re not in English but in a Slavic-type language (Polish, Czech, etc.)….so it’s more Soviet than Redneck.
I thought the hot water setup was pure genius.
So what is it then (the coffee/hot water heater) ?
Ghetto Fabolous,or Redneck Ingeniuity?
Please clarify,as I don’t like to get my subcultures mixed up.
Clearly neither redneck nor ghetto fabulous. Look at the labels on the products. I didn’t see any English. The white thing is a tea kettle and we all know nobody in America drinks tea. Pay attention for the love of god.
Sad about those nasty rebels flags?
@Sadie
Sad about those nasty rebels flags? Well think god the civil war was fought to end slavery. Oh wait, Lincoln didn’t free the slaves until 1863, but the war started in 1861. Furthermore, ol Massah Lincoln only freed slaves in SOUTHERN states. That’s right, slaves in the north, not free. Pay attention to your history books before you comment. Why do I even bother. We are all screwed no matter what. We have the most powerful communication tool ever invented by humanity and we use it to post pictures of hicks and then argue about history. We are doomed, DOOMED!!!
Actually, slavery was illegal in the North then. There wasn’t any need to free people who were already free.
Uh, no it wasn’t Lincoln specifically made it so any state admitted to the union after 1863 could not have slavery. He didn’t want to lose the slaveholder support in the north.
There was just as much slavery under the confederate flag as under the united states flag.
The south would have won the war if they would have outlawed slavery.
Funny how the conversation turns to slavery.
That’s exactly what I was just thinking lol
Let’s get one thing clear…. … .. ..
Those “Rebel flags” do not stand for times of slavery to us! It is a sign of SOUTHERN PRIDE!!
WHY does everything have to be about race w/ you Northern people?
Another thing ~ ~ My great Grandfather fought in that war AND he’s BLACK. We fought along the side of white men, the war was not about slavery, it was over taxes!! For the LOVE Of GOD people.. Be a leader and not a follower, don’t believe ALL you’re told…. … Do your own studies!! omg!
I’m proud of my heritage and my Southern style roots… and I’m a Black woman w/ a Rebel Flag.. Only difference between you and me, I know the truth behind the flag. To me, it’s sad you don’t.
Preach it Redneck Woman….I’m with you ….this is what my white mama has always taught us…God Bless Us Everyone….in keeping with the season!!
Being a north-westerner, I honestly never knew the point of the confederate flag (such as seeing it these days). It does have a bit of a bad name here, because in the north (montanna, idaho, etc) most people that have that flag on trucks/houses are the anti-government/racist types. I’m sure it’s not that way in the south, but people here that use it…not usually people that are nice. Bear in mind we have a lot of crazy “white power” people out here (but not all…also many normal nice people here
crakkityjones, it’s the same down here in South MS.
God bless you…… my family has since moved to Texas, but alot of them were originaly from the south…. in fact alot of my family records were lost in the burning of Atlanta… as were so many others family records…
‘you Northern people’ lolz
@me-mo Definitely redneck
…so that’s what happened to my FEMA trailer
hehehehe , classic rednecks , best laugh I had all week
I think if the gummint (city, county, state, & feds) would just let people adapt to their
plight best they can, there would be zero homeless people. But when homeless
are treated like criminals, that’s when the heartlessness of the system really
exposes itself. This is what’s happening across the USA, a supposedly Christian country. Tent cities are made illegal, beggers are hauled off to jail. Much worse stuff happens. As more people lose jobs and their homes, we will see the real inhumaneness of the system exposed, although it will not be in the sanitized mainstream news.
In terms of adaptation, I think it’s certainly fair to say that there are some pretty striking examples here. By these few snapshots, it’s impossible to tell whether or not the persons involved had to make due with less, or whether they just indulged in a dubious shortcut to a result because they had better things to concentrate on. With this in mind, once again, what’s left is the lighter side of life, specifically in home improvements, with hopefully a laugh or two at the creativity demonstrated here.
Thanks for comments.
Wow! A supposedly Christian country that was founded due to religious persecution. Maybe you havent heard about the separation of church from state.
Hey! You have to admit, that home theater was pretty ingenious! Perhaps a little tough to get through the door on the back side of it…but ingenious none-the-less, especially the seating! Great stuff!
Ha! Yes, the ingenuity cannot be disputed! Thanks for comments.
Well, I thought some of the remodels looked pretty good.
The bucket seats in the home theatre looked pretty comfortable.
The trailer apartment building looked cool, don’t know if I’d want to be there if a big wind came along.
I’ve seen the pickup truck pool before, in real life. Kinda hard on the springs, I think.
And I ever again live in a place that has the right tree, I’m going to be looking for a swinging couch.
ps.
Oh yeah, the buried school bus. Great place to grow green. I’ve seen that somewhere in real life, also.
great blog..!! It was an awesome fact..
I love this country. People are so innovative.
great bunches of laughs…and some good ideas. I live in an artsy community where many would be accepted as a resourceful way of doing things…And green, as it is better to reuse than recycle ! Do we care if people laugh? Are we redneck? No to both…And we can laugh, too. Thanks for posting these. I plan to pass them along.
You have to admit that Rednecks are quite innovative.
I love the trailer condo. Keep up the good work…..
Perhaps if some of us should use our imagination more instead of our credit cards.
Wow….Every single photo I saw I said either “Wow. O.o ” or “What the hell?”
Weird, yet strangely..interesting..
Everyone here had the exact same reaction! You’re in good company. Thanks for comments!
Holy heck, that last one is in my town. It’s not there anymore, though. It was right next to the Sonic.
I love these pictures! With the exceptionof the plywood, the rest are creative, interesting and brilliant solutions. I bet that little boy loved his funky swimming pool and I will remember the fix with the coffee maker if my hot water ever goes out. The only sad part here is the word ‘redneck’ on so many of the pictures. For me, the word ‘redneck’ is synonomous with ‘stupid’. Maybe I need to rewire my noggin. Maybe ‘redneck’ really means ‘genius’.
That Flag! That Flag!……..
People should really study history before buying the politically correct line on the War Between the States. Less than 5 percent (historical fact) of the Southerners who fought in that war were slave owners. So I ‘reckon’ they were all fighting to protect some rich white dudes slaves! Why don’t you take time from feeling guilty to look at the POLITICAL deal in 1860 ? Sorry but you will find out that there were people in the North who were using the issue of slavery to further there political means. But hey, I digress here. I’m just a dumb educated Southerner who has actually taken the time to research the issues behind what went on during that period. Hey how about that politically correct Jonah Hex…..bad, bad Confederates……….I mean bad! And evil too!
My thoughts exactly!!
@All that think the Confederate Flag is a symbol of slavery: learning to read is a necessary skill. Learning to distinguish propaganda from fact is a another. You have yet to master either.
Those that have perverted this symbol of Southern Pride likewise need to learn about the heritage behind the flag.
The CSA’s Constitution banned international slave trade. No new slaves were to be imported. Eventually, had the Confederacy been left alone, slavery would have died out because historically, a slave-based economy cannot compete with a free one.
Lincoln used slavery as the excuse to rape and pillage the South. The reasons he and those in power at the time wanted to do so were more in line with taxes, and the right of States to decide what goes on inside their own borders, slavery or otherwise.
Much like how some states allow medical cannabis, or right-to-carry, yet the Feds are against it.
@Redneck Woman: You go girl!!
Someone else has pointed out that the “mansion” is a set for a play, but it’s still hella cool.
Love the bus-tornado-shelter. Bit of dirt on top and it’d be a good fallout shelter as well.
The Home Theatre was actually a damn good and stylish idea. Why buy expensive seating that’ll fall apart in no time, when you can get durable, nice seating from the junk yard. And it’s “Green” as well.
#1 is not a redneck mansion. Nice try though. This is actually a set at the Openluchttheater in Amsterdam where plays are performed in the summer months and the “redneck mansion” is from the production of Ivanov. The more you know…
the one with the license plates on it… ive seen it before can someone tell me where it is?
Great pics. As for the ‘offended’ people…you could post anything today and there someone who is ‘offended’. Most of the folks who devised these things do so because they can and it is either practical or funny. They do not need nor want the defense offered by those ‘offended’. It’s just too hard for some to just enjoy.
………I don’t know …. I like some of these ideas :0) But than I think I’m a “hippie” at heart…minus the free love and drugs :0) ..but beer… Yes……. a nice Black and Tan ;0)
I love the greenhouse on the shipping container in the trailer condo complex. I wonder if it’s a community garden?
The home theater arrangement actually seems very ingenious. Why overspend on specialty-item theater-style chairs when car seats are just about the same thing and can be obtained at junkyard the world over for a fraction of the price?
The water heater is taken from another website discussing Eastern Europe. Because of that, I doubt the credibility of the other items. Please do research before attempting to make fun of the lower class.
Hi Isa,
The plight of the poor is a serious issue, for sure. If you’re interested in how to help them, you might want to read this other post we’ve written about poverty in America and what to do about it.
Thanks for comments.
The first pic is a redneck version of Cinque terre Italy! ha
When the BBQ grill gets dirty, you just bring it back to the supermarket and get a clean one.
i have to say, i love the flat screen tv idea…. apparently she didn’t want the tv to take up alot of space in the living room…. it looks like the room that the tv is stuck into is a laundry room with an ironing board…. A+++ for creativity.
I now have all the ideas I need to get started on some home improvements on the abode. Gotta laugh. Why so serious???? egh?? Off to the shop and the dump and dumpters.
Redneck? Would you guys have as much fun with black people, or Jews, or Muslims, or Hispanics? You need to poke fun at somebody and so you ridicule in a way that won’t get you in trouble? Grow a pair.
I’ve got no problem poking a little fun. We all can take it. Just get tired of the PC.
Want to prove me wrong?
Lets see a little something with pictures about how muslims force women to walk around wearing burlap sacks. How about a montage on black people with gold teeth? I’ll keep checking your site.
Hi Jason, Thanks for comments
I understand what you’re saying. I think it’s important to note that there are no references to race or religion to be found in our piece. From where we were coming from, the piece is about the projects depicted, and how innovative/absurd/amusing some of them are. This piece is not a profile of a group of people as a whole, particularly surrounding their race or their religion. The term ‘redneck’ may be a culturally loaded term. But the context (an important concept) of that term here is about an approach to life, not about someone’s religion or genetic make-up.
As such, making comparisons between groups along those lines when it comes to this piece simply doesn’t apply. So I’d just as soon keep away from that particular region of discussion.
Thanks again for the point you made, and for comments.
The first picture looks like a really elaborate trailer tree-house!
It’s cool!
Great pics. I can not believe that these people are actually allowed to vote!
I’m not a redneck…I’m a resourceful confederate!
Ha! Awesome.
Lol. That looks like something I would do.
The first picture is actually from a play, and not real…just an FYI.
I love the skip converted to swimming pool. Classic.
I’ve seen this fifty time and it’s still funny
The license plate house is in Hinsdale, NH. I have to drive past it a couple days a week on my way to school
LMAO! Absolutely awesome! I actually did something similar to the redneck flat screen like 10 years ago. I bought a t.v. too large for the entertainment center we already had, so I cut the side out of the entertainment center with a jigsaw. It wasn’t pretty, let me tell you. Sometimes the most practical solution isn’t always the most attractive.
I’m from the south {born & raised} I guess you can even call me a “redneck”
Not offended by all means. I like the pics, gave me a laugh. I think some people just get offended to have something to talk about. These are very unique ideas!
Being Redneck has nothing to do with war or even being poor. It’s a simple “adjective”. Just Sayin!!!
When you’re rich and creative… you’re an eccentric.
When you’re poor and creative… you’re a redneck.
First picture isn’t a redneck-mansion but the stage for an open-air theatre play performed in Amsterdam, Holland some years ago.
Their imagination and ingenuity are just amazing. I couldn’t have thinked of any other better uses for some of these scraps.
Im diggin the flatscreen. LOL
I actually thought the underground-ish bus was really cool.
Anybody else read this whole document in a Larry the Cable Guy voice?
Picture 1 is a set for a play, not an actual residence.
