Today’s guest post is from Bailey Harris, who writes for AreaRugs.com. The topic in question is about how to get out of having to buy commercial cleaners so that you can save some money, and use eco-friendly materials in your cleaning regimen at the same time. Also, Bailey talks about how to treat stains that happen from time to time, using the recipes for homemade floor cleaners. Take a look.

Making your own eco-friendly floor cleaners may sound intimidating, but the truth is, they are simple to make and will save you money. You may already have most of the items you need to make various floor cleaners in your home. With only a few ingredients, you will be able to safely clean carpet, laminate flooring, wood, and tile. Here are some recipes that will go easy on both the planet and your wallet.

Green Floor Cleaners For Carpet

There are a few easy recipes for cleaning carpet. If you need to spot-clean, combine some white vinegar with baking soda. Mix them until they form a paste. Rub the paste into the stain with a small brush–an old toothbrush would work nicely for this. Let the area dry, and then vacuum up any remaining paste.

Another easy way to spot-clean is to blot the stained area with club soda. Repeat until the stain is gone. You can make a foam-cleaner by mixing 1/4 cup Castile (vegetable-based) soap with 3 tablespoons of water. Stir the mixture quickly until it turns into a foam. Dab it on the stained area, then rinse, blot, and let dry.

To remove a grease stain, put either baking soda or cornstarch on the area you wish to clean and leave it for 12 to 24 hours. You can then vacuum the area and repeat as necessary until the stain has been removed. For cleaning large carpeted areas, you can make a white vinegar and water solution and apply it to the carpet using a steam cleaner.

Green Cleaners For Laminate Flooring

To make earth-friendly cleaner for laminate flooring, mix 2 teaspoons of baby shampoo with a gallon of hot water and you’re ready to clean! You can also mix 2 ounces of dye-free dish detergent, 2 cups of white vinegar, 1 cup lemon juice, and hot water.

If you prefer, you can leave out the lemon juice and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to add a nice fresh fragrance [ED: of course, make sure that you don't over-wet your laminate floor. Keep your mop damp, not wet].

Green Tile Floor Cleaners

To clean a tile floor, mix together: 4 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 and 1/4 cups of white vinegar, and 1 and 1/2 gallons of hot water. After you’ve mopped the floor, re-mop with a bucket of hot water to rinse.

To clean grout, mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts warm water. Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray the grout in between the tiles. Leave it for 30 minutes and then rinse with water.

Green Cleaning Products For Wood Floors

For wood floors, combine 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and 2 gallons of hot water. This solution is not as strong as the cleaners you can buy in the store because it does not contain any harsh chemicals. Because it isn’t as powerful, you may need to clean the area twice. While the floor is drying, mix up another 1/4 cup vegetable oil with 1/4 cup white vinegar. Apply this mixture in a thin layer using a circular motion to polish the floor. You can add a couple of drops of essential oil to scent the solution. Essential oils of orange and lemon are a nice touch.

With a few key ingredients you can make your floors sparkle and shine. They are easy to make, and you can feel good knowing these solutions are safe for you, your family, and the Earth.

  1. Thanks for this great article! I have bookmarked this and will continue to use your advice. I saw something on TV that said that basic detergent products such as shampoo and washing up liquid were just as good as the very expensive carpet and upholstery cleaners. I have laminate floors so will try your green recipe for them. I also hate using chemical products indoors because of their smell and toxicity. I have cats and they also don’t like the cleaning products so I tend not to use them.

Irrespective of the type of tile and tile floors designs, there are two rules that one has to follow to maintain tile floors in bathrooms, kitchen, etc.there are some good antimicrobial products like
anti bacterial hand wipes ,anti bacterial wipes, antibacterial cleaning products, antibacterial hand sanitizer spray .The first rule is to wipe up spills immediately and the second rule to be remembered is maintenance cleaning keeps harsh chemicals and harder work at bay. Keep absorbent cloths, a et or dry vacuum to clear spills. We usually wipe up juice or pet accidents from the floor, however, we should not forget that water and dirt are also spills.

Great post! I’m getting ready to do all the rugs in the apartment building I own since a few tenants are moving out. I was wondering if these cleaning solution recipes could be used with the carpet cleaning extractor I already own. I know I could buy cleaning products but it will be nice to let all the new tenants with pets and children how the rugs have been cleaned. Thanks again!

I agree with the green, alternative cleaning methods for floors that can actually match its expensive counterparts. With existing items in homes these days, there is no doubt that floors can be cleaned the easy and inexpensive way. Being in the flooring Houston industry, I understand these tips and would also recommend it to those who would think of using them.
