I like the concept, I'm going to loathe the execution. Getting a qualified building inspector is difficult, at best. Adding another layer of inspection (state oversight) is going to be the biggest hurdle. I'm all for the rebates though.

Wow, this is a very interesting post. I didn't realize that bamboo was strong enough to meet safety standards for motorcycle helmets or be constructed as the main material for a car or truck. This is very cool. I've read before that there is actually a lot of bamboo growing in the U.S., even though it hasn't gained the full popularity of the people of North America. I'm sure with everyone on a continual "green" kick, bamboo will probably become the fastest growing (for usage, not growth in the ground, which it already is) material available.

I am pleased to see this article about the many ways that earthbag construction is being used around the world now. In order to clarify some of the points made, I'll make a few comments.

Earthbag building can happen fairly rapidly, but to create a home in one day would be a bit of a miracle. Even with a trained crew it would take many days to complete a livable structure.

While thick walls of earth will certainly buffer the interior temperature from the extremes of heat and cold, in areas of extreme weather some form of insulation is also needed to be comfortable over time.

In most areas, the foundation trench should be first be filled with gravel, or the first few rows of bags should be filled with gravel, to keep water from wicking up into the walls.

I would emphasize the need to quickly plaster the bags, since the UV in sunlight will soon deteriorate the material and compromise the structure.

I encourage you to read more about all of this at my websites: www.earthbagbuilding.com, www.earthbagstructures.com and www.greenhomebuilding.com.

This is just another case of lawyers making huge winnings and the plaintives getting peanuts.

Next do we sue all licensed drivers because the exhaust causes global warming?

Class action lawsuits are getting out of hand in most cases.
