Choosing decking materials, like choosing any sort of building materials, isn’t just about how it looks. Although look is extremely important, function and longevity are just as important. A lot of what affects function and longevity when it comes to decks is your local climate. And, just to circle back to the way your deck will look, thinking about the kinds of climate your deck will need to stand up to will affect that too, in the long term.

It may be that you choose a certain type of decking material because of certain unique advantages it offers. Most natural wood decking, for instance, is chosen because many wood species used for decking have natural resistance to wind, rain, and UV rays. Many of these kinds of wood decks are extremely robust no matter what your climate throws at them. But, choosing your deck according to climate can save you the time on maintenance. And time is an important commodity, right?

So, with that in mind how do you choose deck materials with your local climate in mind. Well, take a look at this resource that should help get you started, so that you can invest in the right deck for your location just in time for Spring deck-building season!

  1. I really miss having a deck. Midwest has them all over but in arizona… don’t see a single one. All concrete and gravel out here :/ It’s nice to know the types of material to use, but maybe in a later post how to properly seal those materials in different parts of the country… snow vs brutal sun etc.

  2. Rob, This is a great resource. So often, aesthetics dominate the decision making process. The look of a deck is, of course, very important, but if that look has a dependence upon a huge time and cash investment in terms of ongoing maintenance, you could be seeing red every time you go outside, regardless of what color you select in the show room. Remember, common decking surfaces are common in your area because they work well. Tried and true is a good thumb rule for a reason.

Rob, This is a great resource. I would like to highlight other material options for decks with little or no maintenance, including concrete or stone paverdecks. The sun is the most adverse natural element, and will without question limit the aesthetic life of paint, wood, or composite, or PVC decking to less than 15 years. The only products known to have a long aesthetic life in the response to the sun are natural stone or concrete pavers. Some installations date back hundreds of years.
