Well it is almost time for Santa to leverage his inspiring supply chain and pull off the most impressive display of logistics seen, well, since last Christmas. It also means that we are within a month of the hectic trade show season for key flooring personnel across the globe. Here are the top 3 flooring shows of Q1 2012 and a brief commentary of each.

Domotex Hannover – January 14 – 17, 2012 at Convention Center in Hannover, Germany

http://www.domotex.de/home

This show has approx 38,000 visitors from 87 different countries. Trade show promotion says that 94% of 2011 visitors believed it was an important enough show that they will return again in 2012. Leading trends that often make it to America the following year can be seen here. Some great German and Belgium beers available later in the afternoon.

Surfaces – January 24 – 26, 2012 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV

http://www.surfaces.com/attendee/show-information.aspx

Vegas Baby! Get lots of sleep in advance, because if you’ve never been to this show it’s a lot of long days and nights. If you are active in the North American industry it’s hard to not be at this show. Certainly the North American industry flagship show to kick off the year.

Domotex Asia / ChinaFloor – March 27 – 29, 2012

http://www.domotexasiachinafloor.com/en/

Largest trade show for flooring in Asia. Visitors in 2011 equaled 39,343. This is personally my most productive show as I save a lot of travel time by arranging a full schedule of meetings with out of town factory owners.

How to prepare for the shows

All 3 shows are busiest the first 2 days. The 3rd day is usually 1/3 the traffic (ie: stats for Domotex Asia were 16,000 per day visists for day 1 and 2, but only 6,667 on day 3). So if you have the energy to stay for day 3 you probably can get around much easier. All the shows on Day 1 get very busy. Register in advance to avoid long lines opening morning.

Finally, I suggest whenever possible to arrange your meetings in advance of the show… it is difficult to connect with key people if you randomly walk up to booths. At all three shows be prepared to get creative on your meeting spots… every single person has the same idea as you where to meet, so avoid saying “lets met at the coffee shop in Hall X”. Good luck!

BuildDirect Impressions At The 2011 Canton Fair

Here is a brief video of me at the 2011 Canton Fair, located in Guangzhou, China.

This is a massive show with so many things – too many things! It is not a specialty show and I treat it as the fourth or fifth show I’d attend in the flooring industry. The two Domotex shows in Germany and China along with Surfaces in Vegas are far superior for flooring industry.

Guangzhou is not an easy place to navigate, especially during show time. A first-time visitor needs to be prepared. I would not suggest going there if it’s your first trip to China unless you have experienced people with you; just my opinion. It is expensive and sooooooo busy. Stories of waiting an hour for a taxi, and still not getting one, are common. You need to be well organized or be willing to pay huge amounts for hotel accommodation to stay within walking distance of the Fair.

Canton Fair 3 BuildDirect Impressions At The 2011 Canton Fair

The main difference from this show to others is this is focused on volume. Most booths are very small, and you’ll get far more from a website then you will going to most of these booths.

At Surfaces or Domotex you can see new products, note trends and meet some key people. At Canton Fair you rarely see the key decision-makers in or around the booths, and little is shown in the way of new trends or product offering (the booths are really small). The show has a gadget feel to me.

Canton Fair 1 BuildDirect Impressions At The 2011 Canton Fair

The flip side is that there is a large volume of companies present and if your goal is to gather hundreds of business cards then this is a good place to start. There are always gems out there, so you could get lucky. But it can be exhausting finding them.

For a company like mine, we tend to use the show for non-flooring related items as you can see so many categories; lighting, siding, decking, kitchen & bath, tools, etc. We have a set agenda on what we want to see and who we need to meet, so it is mostly organized in advance.

Canton Fair 2 BuildDirect Impressions At The 2011 Canton Fair

If the global economy is economically in the tank, you wouldn’t know it from this show. Thousands and thousands of people are steaming in and out every day. I found this year definitely busier than last year.

As with all shows you plan to attend, have a plan in advance and pre-set meetings beforehand with key decision makers. If that is not your focus, I will leave you with this thought: of all the shows I have ever attended, if someone told me they have absolutely no idea what they want to do or looking for a new business idea and they feel the ‘need to buy from China’, then this is a great show for you. It has gadgets galore.

Remember, many of the booths are agents (not factories) and are companies focusing on that type of buyer. So, keep your wits about you and make good business decisions … and have some fun!

Wood Flooring Forum 2011 in Shanghai

Recently I was in Shanghai to speak on an international panel at ‘Wood Flooring Forum 2011’. It was a full day event in conjunction with the massive Domotex trade show held annually at the end of March in Shanghai. The Wood Flooring Forum was held March 25th at the Kerry Hotel Pudong.

wood flooring forum panel e1304021894559 Wood Flooring Forum 2011 in Shanghai

Myself (far right) speaking on the panel, sitting beside Frederik Dreesman and Matt Spieler (Guo Hui is on the panel as well, just outside of photo)

Organizers included China National Forest Product Industry Association, Chinese Academy of Forestry, Shanghai Building Materials Industry Association and along with various local government groups. I know that Floor Covering Institute was also heavily involved, albeit they were not recognized on the program.

China is at an interesting cultural stage when it comes to these international event. ‘Face’ is very important and if the right image isn’t portrayed then the desired result of the event is not obtained. I think it would be frustrating to be involved in the organizing committee as I noticed a large number of last minute changes (i.e. speaker changes) occurred.

All in all it was a successful event, one that I would plan to attend again in the future.

The list of speakers was impressive, focusing on Executives from successful American and European companies in the wood floor industry:

  • Frank Ready from Armstrong
  • Benoit Miquel from Tarkett
  • Frederik Dreesman from Homedecor
  • Jim Gould from Flooring Covering Institute

Media and Association members:

  • Matt Spieler, Senior Executive Editor from Floor Covering News
  • Jeff Fairbanks, NWFA Director
  • Juergen Fruechtenicht, editor Parkett Magazine

Me shaking hands with Guo Hui.

And key industry leaders in China, often referred to in China circles as ‘backbone companies’ such as PowerDekor CEO – Guo Hui were also in attendence.

My portion involved speeches and then a panel discussion. The topic being: ‘Marketing & Sales: Approaching the Retail Channel in Major Western Markets. This was geared towards Asian manufacturers interested in selling to retail in the US, Canada and Europe. On the stage with me were PowerDekor’s Guo Hui, Frederik Dreesman from Homedecor and Matt Spieler of Floor Covering News.

The coolest part of the whole event was wearing the United Nations type translator head phones.

I felt like a foreign diplomat!

I was flattered to receive a large number of questions from the crowd, the Chinese business community in particular was very excited about internet growth and the BuildDirect model, so this triggered a large amount of discussion. I won’t go into too much detail, but if this is an event that you have interest in attending next year I suggest investigating the Floor Covering Institute site to learn more.

Building Business Relationships on Common Ground (Or Ice)

It’s about relationships.

We have an exciting growth company in a cool industry but at the end of the day what makes me happy is the relationships I get to make with co-workers, customers, stakeholders and suppliers. It is easy to get busy and stay stuck behind a desk, head down and working hard. But it is important to make the time to grow relationships when the opportunity arises. I feel it is one of the key measures of success in business.

Well this blog post is about one of those times.

I am Canadian, and grew up playing hockey. It has been a passion of mine for over three decades. One thing I was always jealous of growing up in the Vancouver area of Western Canada was that we very rarely had the chance in the winter to play hockey outside like you can in other regions of Canada. Pond hockey was something that seemed to happen in most areas of Canada, but not in the Vancouver area. I can remember skating outside only a few times. As it wasn’t a regular occurrence, a competitive game outside was extremely rare.

So when supplier of ours, who has since become a friend, suggested a visit to his hardwood flooring mill in Quebec, my mind started racing. When he mentioned he had a cabin in a rural village and that they keep the surrounding property cleared for playing regular pond hockey games, I was hooked!Pond Hockey Team Building Business Relationships on Common Ground (Or Ice)

Fellow BuildDirect’er Rob Jones and I set up a video schedule to shoot the process of making a sustainable hardwood floor from start to finish. We arranged a visit to the forest where hardwood trees are responsibly grown and harvested, we spent time at all stages of the milling process and then the finishing line. We spent quality time with the great staff at the mill and learned so much about the process of this beautiful, sustainable type of flooring. My personal favorite is a Canadian Hard Maple. It’s durable, stable and beautiful.

But below is a video of my true passion; hockey!

Playing competitive pond hockey with friends outside (and finishing with cold beers) was nothing short of brilliant. With about -4C (24F) and no wind, it was perfect conditions. I’m glad no wildlife came down and joined the action. We walked around the area before the game and the amount of wildlife tracks was incredible.

Watch and enjoy…

The rules: we played for approx 1.5 hours of 4 on 4 hockey, no goalies. But you had to be inside the crease area to score, so it was a tight-checking game that ended 10-9. Our team snuck out the victory. The mill owner, JP, put up $80 to the winning team. Does that make me a professionally paid hockey player?

Anyway, I was happy I survived as a few of the guys were in their early 20’s and really knew how to play. Frankly, I’m the guy at 1:40 of the video that gets rocked! My elbow was black and blue for 2 weeks (mental note: wear elbow pads next time… and keep your head up!)

Cheers.

Ducks in a truck.

What else can I say?

At a road stop at the side of a highway driving to who knows where, rural China. I heard this crazy noise (and smelt an odd smell) and, well, here is what I saw.

 The Best Food In China

After visiting a factory in Chengdu (Sichuan province China) we went for lunch in a small country restaurant. It was smokin’ hot out so we decided to go for smokin’ hot local food! Sichuan is of course the most famous region of China and one of the most famous in the world for very spicy food.

The location was a gem of a ‘hole in the wall type’ restaurant. I love this, I don’t need fancy restaurants, I want to see what it is like to live like a local and what they enjoy to eat. A ‘day in the life of’ is a cool thing I get to experience on these business trips and it is something a tourist almost certainly would never see.

Restaurant in Sichuan in China 300x224 The Best Food In China

Notice the netting above the tables to stop the leaves falling onto the food. Five tables, about 30 chairs. The location of the restaurant was down a dirt road, just off of the local river, where the fish we ate was caught.

The food was amazing; local wild river fish was the specialty. I love some spicy flour in my food. During the meal, after a couple of beers, one of the locals challenged me to eat a local spice / seed called Huajiao, also called Sichuan Pepper. It is a small round pepper / spice, the size of a small pebble. It is used to cook. I don’t think people eat it.

Anyway, they made me promise to only chew it twice and then swallow, which I did. Wow! strong taste and then wham! my mouth, my lips, and the side of my face went completely numb. Crazy! Like being at the dentist.

There was no sign for the restaurant.  People just seem to know it exists. There were local dogs were running about, with the sound of insects and birds chirping in the trees.

In my opinion a lot of the best food in China comes from Sichuan.

Enjoy!
Rob

 The Transparent Volkswagen Phaeton Factory

A friend of mine sent this Youtube video on to me. He is a car guy so he was excited about seeing this from a car-buying perspective. I got excited from a technology and supply chain perspective.

Wow, this is impressive! It is a VW automobile ‘transparent’ factory located in downtown Dresden, Germany. This clip comes from the TV Show Megaworld and think it was originally aired on the Discovery channel.

Check it out. These are some amazing advancements in production and supply chain management.

The factory is in the center of town. The locals understandably had no interest in having a factory in the middle of town, with expectations of an eyesore of a building, added traffic, pollution, noise, etc.  Solution? A building that looks more like a museum of modern art rather than a factory, very quiet with almost no inbound traffic.

They ingeniously used the existing street car tracks and created a cargo tram (2:03 of the video). Then, robotic sleds drive around the plant and take the auto parts to the required locations (2:18 ). A magnetic guidance system built into the Canadian Maple hardwood floors is used to enable this. The floor also delivers power for computers and tools on portable work stations. Come on! How cool is that?

With glass walls everywhere, it is the only factory in the world the public can walk around and watch the full production line of a car being made. The luxury car being made is the VW Phaeton. It is a car that had no commercial success in America, but does apparently sell pretty well in Europe.

Once produced the cars sit in a transparent storage tower that is visible from the street (5:50) or you can purchase and drive it right off the line.

Cigarettes, Smoked Salmon and CARB Compliant Flooring

Smoked Salmon 300x200 Cigarettes, Smoked Salmon and CARB Compliant FlooringI had a chat with one of our new employees about CARB and what ‘CARB compliant’ means when referring to flooring products. Without going into too much detail, CARB refers to California Air Resources Board, the clean air agency in California.

Interesting to note that they are the only State allowed to have its’ own clean air agency regulating the State. Federal law was passed afterwards and all other States have to follow the Federal Clear Air Act (or I think they can follow California’s but I am not sure on the rules around that).

CARB is a big deal. Did you ever watch the 2006 documentary film, Who Killed the Electric Car? Great film. CARB plays a key part in the film. They are a powerful agency.  So a decision made by that regulatory body can dramatically affect an industry.

Flooring is one such industry that has been affected. When someone wants to sell, lets say a laminate floor in California, it must be ‘CARB compliant’. Since formaldehyde was reclassified in 2004 as carcinogenic to humans, my understanding is California state law requires CARB to reduce all toxic air contaminants.

Reading all this is, frankly, rather scary. It sounds really bad. Like, I’m scared for my kids bad. I was never able to put into words why we should be complying with this, but it seemed like the right thing to do. It felt like the right thing to do. So,  BuildDirect made the corporate policy that all laminate flooring would be 100% CARB compliant for all North America. Not just California, but every State and every Canadian Province.

All our products have been E1 compliant (or better) for years (E1 is another formaldehyde emission score, a strict score established by European testing years ago). But CARB is even more strict. To get that strict this formaldehyde thing must be deadly. Should we all put masks on to protect our families? Words like ‘carcinogenic’ and ‘toxic’ seem frightening, and E1 sounded so strict. But to feel the need to be even more strict, there must be a serious risk.

I came across a blog post on the NWFA Hardwood Floors website. NWFA is the main association for the flooring industry. The blog was written by an industry vet, Elizabeth Baldwin, with a lot of environmental compliance experience; excellent blog post. I felt she put this formaldehyde scare into perspective, I am not frightened any more!

It actually makes me wonder why we couldn’t all just be E1 compliant. Well, I guess most of us can choose to be, except California. But reality is California is such an influential State that the full market place will pay for it. Although I feel CARB’s heart is in the right place, due to complexity of compliance and altered raw material supply, it is costing the end consumer more money. I’m not sure they are any better off.

Here are some interesting facts of formaldehyde emissions, clip from Elizabeth Baldwin’s post about formaldehyde she wrote on November 2, 2010:

E1 glue emits a formaldehyde level of 0.1 ppm… directly smoking just one cigarette will put 40.0 ppm into your lungs! Yes, one cigarette has 400 times the formaldehyde of E1 flooring”

Formaldehyde is an easy target, but frankly it is not a true hazard in normal industrial usage. Formaldehyde is like sunlight—it occurs naturally and we cannot live without it. At higher exposures, it is an irritant. Too much sunlight, you get sunburned. Too much formaldehyde, your eyes water and your nose runs. All people are exposed to naturally occurring formaldehyde daily. In fact, the average person processes about 1.5 ounces of formaldehyde each day as part of normal human metabolism.

The World Health Organization and Health Canada have estimated that the average adult ingests 9 times more formaldehyde each day from food than they inhale from all airborne sources combined. Furthermore, when California was considering their new anti-formaldehyde crackdown, their own data showed that the formaldehyde emitted by composite wood products accounts for less than 5% of all of the formaldehyde emitted into California air!

Here are some other numbers regarding natural concentrations in every day things:

1 apple: 2.0 mg/100 g
1 onion: 2.0 mg/100 g
1 carrot: 0.8 mg/100 g
1 tomato: 0.6 mg/100 g
1 spinach: 0.5 mg/100 g
1 Coca Cola: 0.7 mg/100 g
And smoked salmon contains 100 mg/100g

Enjoy your smoked salmon!

Flooring Trends 2011 Post Domotex Pre Surfaces Preview

domotex 2011 300x199 Flooring Trends 2011 Post Domotex Pre Surfaces Preview I really enjoyed the Domontex show this year. I’m sure I wasn’t popular when I was tweeting on the Saturday that Day 1 of the show was very slow, much slower than last year. But as @theDomotex pointed out, the Sunday was very busy.  And by the end of the Sunday, it may have actually been busier than last year.

Regardless, I had an awesome show. It was productive.  We closed some key business we needed to close. I saw many of my industry peers and met new ones. I have numerous friendships that have grown and it is always a fun show to catch up with friends and follow any new trends.

What were the new, innovative trends in hard surface flooring at this year’s show? In a two words, ‘not much’.

That isn’t to say there weren’t many cool new looks, new decors, and colors. But as far as innovation in the hard surface market I saw nothing really new. I saw many alterations of old innovation; some different combinations  like a bevel added to a product here, or a narrower or wider board or a new underpad attached there, and all with a few new decors or colors.  But, there was nothing I’d consider innovative.

This is rare for this show.  It usually has a lot of innovation along with big splashy launches. I think the lack of serious new innovation is reflective of the difficult economic times. It could also mean that last year’s trends are still in vogue and are worth continuing with.

Here are some detailed observations pulled from countless meetings and booth visits:

Engineered Hardwood Flooring 300x225 Flooring Trends 2011 Post Domotex Pre Surfaces Preview Engineered wood Flooring

I will recap the trend in solid and engineered wood with a recap of the booth of a company called ‘Solid Wood Floor’, maybe the best distributor in all of Europe and very progressive in design. They did not add a single new sku to their 2011 line vs 2010. They did showcase a cool interactive retail display ‘egg’,  but no new products. Frankly this company didn’t need to launch any new products.  Their offering of engineered flooring is stylish and stunning and they nailed it at last year’s show.

They continue to showcase wide plank earth tones, white and black floors (a 12″ by 24″ tile look in jet black is very cool) and a trendy looking wide plank distressed line. I was giddy when I saw it last year, and still am. I think the US is ready for some of these ‘euro’ looks and we are actively working on pulling this together for 2011. I expect to see some of this emerge at Surfaces 2011 in Las Vegas, Jan 25 – 27th.

Laminate Flooring

A large portion of this show featured new laminate floor decors, and some ‘new’ hand scraped products which looked good but nothing earth shattering here. There was an expansion of digital print into more mainstream applications, too. Digital print will be more and more prevalent in the marketplace, on laminate, cork, engineered, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), etc. We have sold a direct print product for over 2 years now. So, not new innovation here.  But there are more players on more surfaces, and better machinery for a clear look.

Solid Hardwood Floors

It was the same as last year for me. The wide, long, heavy distressed planks are still everywhere (and I love them!). Some white washing, etc but nothing new if you were at last years show. I did meet a fellow from Estonia that had a unique way of cutting along the grain and creating a puzzle to install in a project, but this has no application in the mainstream market. And it made me dizzy to look at.

Oak Natural Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring 300x199 Flooring Trends 2011 Post Domotex Pre Surfaces Preview Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) Click Flooring

This was everywhere. I saw approx three booths with it last year. This year everyone seemed to have an Luxury vinyl product, many of them click lock. Some featured HDF click lock board (this was at Surfaces last year) which is very DIY friendly. The 5mm click was what struck me as the easiest to use and biggest potential to take off.

Cork Flooring

I saw a lot more of it this year. Some with further innovation by combining cork with vinyl to create a ‘super cork’ … But we will have to see how the market accepts. Cork is not going away, it is evolving and looks really cool, and with digital print technology it could be made to look like anything and have the warm, soft under foot feeling that so many of our young and old customers would embrace. Environmental aspect make this a compelling growth opportunity in the marketplace.

Water-Resistant Flooring Products

These were also at a few booths. Nothing really new here. But as it doesn’t seem to be going away, I wonder if it picks up in market acceptance.

Leather Flooring

These have been around for a couple of years now, but it is getting much more affordable, with the right finish wear layer it could take off. On a sidenote, I stayed in a hotel in Italy recently and they had leather flooring (installed on an HDF click) in the rooms. Wow, did it look rich and elegant. With these being affordable now I think this could find a nice niche in the marketplace. Look for Leather Floors at Surfaces as well. Along with cork, the environmental aspect of this recycled product (the leather comes 100% from the waste in the food industry) make it appealing to many.

China Presence

I’d say the number of Chinese booths this year were half of last year. Read into that any way you want. Sound is becoming a bigger deal. So lots of products were now with underpad or cork attached

Here is a bit different take on the  Domotex Hannover show from Jim Gould, a gentleman that I have a ton of respect for and he is very dialed into the industry.

What To Expect At Domotex Hannover Flooring Show 2011

Flying over Hannover Germany 300x199 What To Expect At Domotex Hannover Flooring Show 2011As I post this, I am in transit Hannover, Germany, looking forward to a great show. Domotex is the granddaddy of European flooring shows. I’ve been numerous times and find it have great value each time. I will be doing a post show report with some video but wanted to get one last update in before the show.

I have connected with Katherine Leon (Director of Sales – DOMOTEX and LIGNA Worldwide Events) and she has giving me some thoughts on this years show which you won’t read anywhere other than my blog.
“There is a lot of optimism as DOMOTEX approached next week in Hannover, Germany. As we continue to see signs of slow and steady recovery in the flooring industry not only domestically here in the states but abroad, we expect to have a strong showing this year from both the exhibitor side and the global buyers attending the event. We look forward to announcing final demographics after DOMOTEX but we expect our numbers to remain steady from last year.”
Katherine will be tweeting from the event so make sure to follow @TheDOMOTEX on twitter or search for #Domotex for the latest happenings at the event.
Take care, have a great week.  After Domotex I will visit some factories and then fly to Las Vegas Surfaces, a busy but productive month!
