In terms of design, there’s been a traditional split between city and country. It’s like the story of the city mouse and the country mouse. But, this is the 21st century. The old divisions when it comes to lifestyle and design are less rigid than they were in the 20th.

One such trend to blur the lines between city and country is the barn style sliding door, which is as much a practical choice as it is a look and feel choice. One of the practicalities is the more efficient use of space, not having to account for the swing radius of a door from, say, a hallway and into a den. There’s a certain freedom to be experienced on that level. But, the visual benefits are undeniable as well.

Here are some examples.

But, the real appeal is the contrast that a barn style sliding door. The crisp right angles of modern interiors matched with the more organic and tonally varied appearance of the barn style sliding door adds a splash of personality, without distracting from other design elements once you pass through the door. Here’s a good example of that kind of effect.

In addition to the rustic look, barn doors used in modern interiors can still be refined. With this example, the function of the door is what it’s all about, blending into a refined and stately look and feel, and creating a seamless transition between zones in a home. The transition strategy here is less about contrast than the one above. Yet, the barn style sliding door still manages to be a feature from one room to another.

There are some surfaces, shapes, and textures that are necessary in your home. But, maybe those elements don’t exactly match what you’re trying to create, design-wise.  This is where barn style sliding doors come in, creating a hideway in this case for washer and dryer, and adding some visual benefit when that room is not in use.

There are times when you want to open up the rooms in your home to make it feel more welcoming. Other times, what’s needed is some quiet space, or alone space. But, shutting starkly decorated doors often has the effect of quashing that welcoming spirit. With this use of barn style sliding doors, that level of privacy and separateness is achieved with some visual flair. And when the doors are open, it’s a visual invitation to “come on in!”

The trend that is becoming associated with the 21st Century is defying the rules between the worlds of design. Sliding doors in a barn door style is a big part of that approach.
