7 Amazing Home Outdoor Living Spaces To Inspire You

It’s that time of year again – time to prepare your outdoor space for summer. Over the last month or so, we’ve highlighted a number of ways to bring your outdoor living spaces to life. But, here are some shining examples from around the world.

If you need some inspiration, check out one of these amazing home outdoor spaces. Although these projects look cumbersome, if you’re even a little bit handy you can do most of the work yourself.

Outdoor living space of their dreams

These homeowners spared no expense when transforming their empty dirt backyard into a gorgeous outdoor living space. The deck features gorgeous brickwork, a trellis for shade, outdoor furniture, an eating space, a hot tub and even a custom built water feature that includes a pond, stream and waterfalls.

Space for everyone

The pool is the centerpiece of this gorgeous backyard oasis but there is space for everyone. The BBQ center is designed for more than grilling; the layout allows the chef to interact with guests instead of being stuck in a corner. The eating area is set above the rest of the yard, which features a bridge over the pool, a private gazebo and a play area for the children.

Outdoor movie theater

Forget the media room; transform your entire backyard into an outdoor movie theater. That is exactly what happened on this episode of the DIY Network’s Yard Crashers. A new set of steps made out of redwood and ledge stone leads visitors up to the hilltop retreat that features matching handmade redwood benches, a horseshoe pit and an outdoor movie screen.

The Outdoor Living Space Bachelor Pad

The team at Yard Crashers is back, this time transforming a poorly designed backyard into an outdoor living space bachelor pad. This new outdoor oasis in the middle of the Las Vegas desert features a stone fire pit, flagstone walkways, a bamboo cabana, an upgraded water feature and even an outdoor television that can handle the Vegas heat.

A colorful transformation

This colorful David Bromstad-designed backyard proves that you don’t have to stick with earth tones to create a tranquil outdoor retreat. Bromstad’s renovation features new pavers, a fire pit, ample outdoor seating and a bevy of flowers in cool purple and pink tones.

Million dollar backyard

No, really, this is a million dollar backyard. This Arizona family wanted to recreate the feeling of a Las Vegas poolside resort in their own backyard. One year and more than a million dollars later, they’ve realized their dream. This dream backyard features three pools, over $100,000 in boulders, close to $300,000 worth of plants, waterfalls, water sculptures, several fire pits and other fire features, a full outdoor kitchen, a putting green, streams, ponds and more. Obviously this isn’t a DIY project but you can use their backyard for inspiration to come up with your own design.

Machu Picchu inspired

Peru’s famous landmark, Machu Picchu, served as the inspiration for this three-tiered backyard. The yard features three key areas: a dining area, a relaxing retreat and a grassy play area for the children. A variety of flowers, succulents and fruit trees are spread amongst the boulders to give this backyard a distinct South American feel. The patio areas were transformed from old cracked concrete using flagstone pavers. Designing around a sloped backyard is challenging but this designer shows how you can work these challenges to your advantage.

So, there you have it, folks. Some great ideas; some ostentatious perhaps, and some actually quite elegant. But, as every great designer knows, your own vision for your outdoor living space can be inspired by nearly anything, even if your budgets and tastes are a little more modest.

The hardest part is figuring out where to buy all the materials.  But you’re in luck. We here at BuildDirect sell most of what you’ll need to transform your outdoor space from blah to wow; pavers, decking, patio furniture, stone and porcelain tile, and more.  Just let us know where to send the free samples of building materials you’ll need.

In any case, good luck with your projects! And once you’re done,  if you have images in Flickr albums or videos of your own to share when they’re done, show them off here in the comments section of this post!

Cheers!

  1. Some great ideas and inspiration. There is so much that can be done you just have to think about it. I have always liked the idea of “decorating” and planting your outdoor living area to match with the local environment. E.g. Using plants, etc native to the area. I also like more plants, less lawn…although I would like a play area for the kids. :)

    • Thanks for comments, Tara.

A lot of what I’m reading (and a lot of what our writers here on this blog are uncovering) is how advantageous it is to landscape one’s property in accordance with local eco-systems. For one thing, it’s a lot easier as plants are able to take care of themselves with much less intervention. And for another, it’s cheaper, for many of the same reasons.

There are some pretty elaborate outdoor living spaces depicted here, for sure. But, as you say, the grand ideas from one person often inspire the more humble (yet completely transformative) ideas of many others.

      Thanks again for comments!

  2. Hi Rob I have just found your web site and I must say is so much go information on it. I am a painter and decorator in London UK and to say it is an urban jungle is an understatement. I am always so impressed when I see a clients home who has taken the time to integrate their home and garden into their local surroundings and actually put some thought into how they present it.

I will be reading your blog more often from now on…

    Thank you

  3. I love that barbeque “corner” on the patio deck. It creates a more social environment for entertaining than the typical arrangement where the cook is outside by himself flippin the burgers. As far as choosing local plants for your landscaping in water – challenged area like Florida it will be mandated in the not to distance future. You are on the vanguard and great article!

  4. looking at your blog, and the things you have done are amazing. alot of great ideas any one can do outdoors

Amazing information for most people to view!

  6. these are some great ways to vitalize and upgrade for that special space.

  7. Hello Rob, i’m currently looking for advice on upgrading our outdoor living space and came across this article. The videos have given me loads of inspiration.

Would be great if someone could point me in the right direction for ideas and plans of diy sheds. Really like the idea of building a big shed rather than buying one from a diy store.

    • Hello Painters Decorators Cornwall!

I’m glad you found the article helpful. We’ve talked about how to de-clutter a shed on this blog this past summer, but not really how to build one from scratch. That might be something we’ll tackle in the Spring – it’s a great idea for an outdoor living and landscaping project, for sure.

      Cheers for comments!
