This spring, choose some DIY home improvement projects that will really impress your neighbors. Planting a garden and giving your house a thorough cleaning have their place, but you can go further with some of these ideas for style and safety.

1. Make a cornice box for your window

Building a cornice box that goes right above the inside of a window can add style to any room. The boxes add depth to the window while giving the visual illusion of higher ceilings.

The good news is that practically anyone with the right tools can build a basic cornice box. It’s easiest to build wooden cornices for DIY projects, unless you have experience working with metal. You just need to make a wooden box that you attach to the top of your window. You can add architectural details with various moldings. If you have some experience working with wood, you can finish this project in just a few hours.

2. Repair your deck

Even the sturdiest decks need maintenance now and then. Ice, snow, and strong winds can knock boards loose, or weaken them structurally. Discolored boards could also mean that the sealant has run its course. If you find discolored boards, replace them as soon as possible.

Yearly maintenance will help keep your deck safe. It’s also a lot cheaper to repair small areas of your deck now than replace the whole thing after a few years of neglect.

3. Build an attractive walkway

Make your home more attractive to visitors by making a stone pathway. Look for a type of stone that complements your home’s aesthetics. You might choose brick, river rocks, or limestone.

Look for an area suitable for a stone path. You can build one that stretches from the driveway to the front door. You can also build stone paths that meander through your backyard or gardens.

Keep in mind that wet stones can create safety hazards. It’s often best to build stone walkways in dry areas. You don’t want anyone to slip while walking to your home’s door.

4. Add a fire pit to your backyard

Spring is the perfect time to build a fire pit for your backyard. The cool nights give you a good excuse to sit outside around the fire. The relatively cool days also make it easier to do the grunt work of digging and carrying bricks.

You have plenty of options when building a fire pit. Some popular options include:

  • making a circular wall of bricks above ground
  • digging a pit that you line with stones
  • building a raised stone pit for your patio

Always make sure you put your fire pit somewhere away from combustible items such as plants, wood fences, and sheds.

5. Update your cabinets

Even a fresh coat of paint can make cabinets look like new. This spring, you should also consider adding new hardware to your cabinets and drawers.

If you’re ready to make bigger changes, swap wooden doors for glass. You can even remove the doors so guests can see everything you keep inside your cabinets. That’s a great idea for people with beautiful dishware.
